GENESIS 2 · SUNRISE · THE DOOR OF THE HOUSE

Eastward מִקֶּדֶם

The direction the garden faces — the door of the house, the way out and the way home.

A garden with a direction

Genesis bothers to tell us which way Eden faces: God plants the garden eastward. When the man is driven out, the guards are posted at the east — the side you leave by, the side you would come back by. Odd detail. Unless you know another house in this book with a guarded east door.

THE FRONT DOOR

Nearly every house has one door that is THE door. Everyone who ever comes in, comes in by it. You know a place by which way it faces — and Eden faces east.

The east side, through the Bible

"And the LORD God planted a garden eastward (miqqedem) in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed."
GENESIS 2:8 (KJV)
"So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east (miqqedem) of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."
GENESIS 3:24 (KJV)
"But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east (qedmah)... shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary... and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death."
NUMBERS 3:38 (KJV, ABRIDGED)

The tabernacle’s one entrance faces east, and its keepers camp there — guarding the way in, on pain of death. The same arrangement Genesis 3:24 just set up: guards, east side, a way kept.

"And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east (qadim)."
EZEKIEL 43:4 (KJV)
"And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east (qidmath) of Eden."
GENESIS 4:16 (KJV)

Exile keeps moving east — Adam out the east side, Cain further east still. And when Ezekiel sees the glory of God come home to his temple, it comes in from the east — back through the door the story left by.

HONEST LIMITS

East is often just a direction — and in Genesis 2:8, some old translations even read miqqedem as “of old” rather than “eastward.” We won’t pretend every compass point is theology. The pattern is specific: the sanctuary’s single east entrance, guarded; expulsion eastward; return from the east. Three books keep that arrangement. We lay it out; you weigh it.
