The Last Adam: the garden at dawn
The story that began in a garden ends in one. John stages the resurrection in a garden — and Mary, seeing the risen Jesus, supposed "him to be the gardener" (John 20:15). John doesn't waste words. The last Adam stands in a garden, doing what the first was placed in one to do.
This scene will gather every thread the first three planted: the gardener; the breath of John 20:22 — Genesis 2:7 done again, to a new covenant people; the seed of the woman; the true temple; the light that has shined; first Adam and last Adam, two heads, two families; and a city whose gates are never shut, where the tree and the river return, and "there shall be no night there."
